Located in a plain area, Pitesti is the seat of Arges county and its largest city. It is famous for the Dacia factory, which is only a few kilometers away from the town, near Mioveni, which provides an important economic and industrial contribution to Pitesti.
A1 motorway connects Pitesti to Bucharest, which transforms the city in an important transit point. Also in the vicinity (about 50 km away) there are also two other important cities - Campulung Muscel and Curtea de Arges.
Pitesti has developed greatly in the last centuries of the last millennium, because in 1746 the town had about 250 houses, with approximately 1,250 residents. Currently Pitesti has a population of 155,383 inhabitants and is divided into thirteen neighbourhoods.
Did you know that:
- Just a few meters away from the County Council, during the communist period, there was a restaurant called "La Cateaua Lesinata" (The Fainted Dog)?
- Pitesti is known as the Tulip City because of the festival it hosts each spring (the Tulip Symphony)?
- One of the witnesses of the communist horrors is the Pitesti Penitenciary? Political prisoners were jailed here in the early years of communism.
- Nicolae Dobrin, called Drake or the Prince of Trivale was born in Pitesti and is one of the most valuable Romanian football players of all time?
Pitesti is located in the central-southern part of Romania, being in the subdivision of the Romanian Plain with the same name. The city is crossed by two rivers, Arges and Raul Doamnei. The climate is temperate, with an average annual temperature of 9° C (slightly higher than the national average) and annual precipitations recorded between the values of 680-700 mm (also higher than national).
Its etymology is uncertain. Nicolae Iorga thought that Pitesti comes from wren (pitul). And Iorgu Iordan considered that the anthroponym comes from pitea, word meaning pita bread. The first documented mention of the town occurs in 1388 and is linked to the reign of Mircea the Elder (the historical records recalling that the ruler had strengthened the Cozia Monastery - "a mill on the border of Pitesti"). And the first mention as a city is recorded in 1510.
However Pitesti is a city that has developed amazingly in the last century of the last millennium, which is visible in the way it is architecturally designed. Pitesti is a part of the Romanian football history (due to the FC Arges team), it is a university centre, it houses a state theater and one of the most beautiful festivals in Romania - Tulip Symphony.
