Sibiu is the seat of the county with the same name and its largest city. Positioned in the centre of Romania, Sibiu has a population of 147,245 inhabitants and is an important economic (one of the Romanian cities with high levels of foreign investment) and cultural (in 2007 it was elected as European Capital of Culture together with the city of Luxembourg) centre.
A former medieval fortress, the town can be considered a stylish city, that we can easily cross by foot (the old center occupies a very small area of the total city area of 12,164 ha). But if we want to visit the whole the city or its surroundings (Sibiu is located at a distance of only 37 kilometres from Paltini? mountain resort, and only an hour and a half drive of one of the most beautiful roads in the world - Transfagarasan) or if we are here on business we could use a car.
As part of the former Kingdom of Transylvania, the city consists of two minorities that have influenced its historical development, while creating an important cultural and religious diversity. We're talking about people of German descent, as well as an important Hungarian community. Also in Sibiu a small Hebrew community is found. These communities give a cosmopolitan vibe to the city by keeping their language and customs from centuries ago.
Did you know that:
- Sibiu was the capital of Transylvania twice, between the years 1692-1791 and 1849-1865?
- In Sibiu the first documented mention of a hospital on the territory of Romania was in 1292?
- The first school on the territory of Romania was documented in Sibiu in 1380?
- In Sibiu the first Romanian book was printed in 1544?
- The territory of Sibiu hosted the world's first rocket experiment conducted by Conrad Haas in 1551?
Sibiu is located in a sub-mountaineous area and it is crossed by the Cibin river. The climate is temperate, but the annual averages are somewhat lower (6° C) than in the rest of the country, because of the proximity to the mountains. The precipitations do not exceed the national averages, having a level of 600-700 mm annually.
Sibiu became around the 14th century one of the most important trade centers on the territory of Romania, which has led to an impressive development of the city, becoming the largest city of German origin from Transylvania and maintaining this status for centuries. The main activity of the population besides trade, was crafts. Since 1376 neither more nor less than 19 craft guilds were known. Each guild had its insignia (e.g. butchers had a pig head as a sign) which can be seen today in the frescoes on the facades of the old town.
Amazing is that the historic center of Sibiu managed to preserve itself totally over the communist period. Thus we can see Saxon or Hebrew houses in the historic city center. In the old center there is also the famous Brukenthal Museum (the first museum in Romania) and the Citadel of Sibiu (with excellently preserved walls and towers). Other attractions on the territory of Sibiu are the Astra National Museum Complex, the Great Square, Huet Square and countless places of worship belonging to various religions (the Orthodox Cathedral, the Synagogue, the Reformed Church, the Catholic Church).
