Timisoara is the third largest city of Romania, with a population of 319,279 inhabitants. It is the seat of Timis county, being one of the most cosmopolitan cities of Romania (one of the few cities in Europe with three state theaters in three languages - Romanian, Hungarian and German.
In its structure there are three ethnic communities - Serbian, Hungarian and German but also Italian (recently arrived for economic purposes), Ukrainian or Slovak. Unfortunately, the Hebrew community which was numerous in the 20th century has seen a drastic decline after the communist period (currently the two synagogues on the territory of Timisoara are closed.
Timisoara is also a former medieval fortress, being under the Austrian administration until 1726, when Eugene of Savoy conqueres the city after a 48 day siege. A part of the defense walls of the city survived the passage of the years. Also in Timisoara you can visit the Museum of the Revolution, the Art Museum, the Synagogue, or Union Square, as well as numerous parks, one of the highlights being Rose Park, which has an impressive collection of rose species.
Did you know that:
- In 1718 in Timisoara the first brewery on the territory of Romania was attested?
- In 1771 the first newspaper is published in Timisoara on the territory of Romania - Temeswarer Nachrichten?
- In 1881 the first telephone network on the territory of Romania was built in Timisoara?
- In 1884 Timisoara becomes the first city in Europe with electric public lighting?
- In 1895 the first road on the current territory of Romania is asphalted in Timisoara?
Timisoara is located in the west of the country, in a plain area. The city is crossed by the river Bega (channeled in 1728, thus becoming the first waterway). The climate is temperate, only that the positioning in an open area brings a few degrees more in the summer and also lowers the temperatures in the winter. The average annual temperatures are around 11° C. Precipitations remain within normal values, specific to a plain area.
The historic city center has a linear structure running parallel to the Bega River, on a distance of about 10 km. The city has developed greatly in recent years, so that in addition to the communist working-class neighborhoods around the old town, today there are important industrial parks (which are sometimes at significant distances from the actual town). Renting a car facilitates travelling in this special organization of the city, regardless of the purpose of your visit.
Timisoara is commonly known for the events of December '89, but the city has many stories to tell to its listeners. Built on a swamp, Timi?oara had to have an ingenious fortification until the late 17th and early 18th century, when the river Timi? was redirected so as not to traverse the current territory of the city and the works for damming the Bega river began. The building of the National Theatre in Timi?oara has stability problems today, precisely because it is built on such a fortification.
A particularity of this area is that, although the Romanians have always been an overwhelming majority (currently 86% of the population is of Romanian origin), the administration was entirely foreign. Only in 1919, with the fall of the Empire Hasburgic, Timi?oara first enters under Romanian administration. This is in fact visible everywhere, from the way the buildings are constructed and placed, to the mindset of the people. Thus Timi?oara is a special city in Romania's landscape which in any case should not be missed.
